During this summer 2014, I will have the privilege and the honor to be able to realize a “Doctor Shadowing” in Pediatric Neurosurgery with Dr. Juan A. Vigo Prieto at the University of Puerto Rico (Medical Science Campus)-Section of Neurological Surgery and the Pediatric Hospital of the Medical Center of Puerto Rico, both located on the same area complex in San Juan. Through this period of time, I consider that I will be able to understand the role and importance of Pediatric Neurosurgery as a medical branch in terms of learning and familiarizing with the profiles of the most common neurological diseases, the most effective treatments and surgeries to cure or alleviate the patients who suffer from them.
In addition, I will learn the different methods or tests to identify neurological illnesses and the medical instruments used to perform the surgeries as well to discuss retrospective-prospective plans in order to manage patient’s health state before and after the neurological-surgical procedure. Apart from all stated before, I will be able to witness the doctor’s role in the patient in the office/clinical setting.
